OK, its seems that people want to know a bit about me. I apologise for commenting on "MaskedMan's" thread, that will be the last I have to say on the matter.
Anyway, to answer angela's question, this is the first karate board I have posted on, and I haven't used the rikimaru name before. I chose this name because it's what the guy out of Tenchu is called, lol.
I do sub wrestling and kickboxing at the moment. Although, admittedly I train more in the sub wrestling than the kickboxibng. I probably do one kickboxing sessiona week at most. I did Karate for a while when I was a kid but other than that I've been doing martial arts now for about four months.

lol, we don't do Kata in sub wrestling darkstar. I'm not sure how we would. What are Forms (Kata) if not just a visualization of actual combat.........could be done with grappling, not a bad idea.

Thanks for the welcomes folks.
lol @ grappling kata. I'm not sure you are being serious MasterH, but in grappling there needs to be the resitance force of a live opponent to make it work. Performing an arm bar or double leg take down to fresh air would be of no benefit whatsoever .... BTW, I sincerely hope Maskedman or Andy don't come along now and say I'm wrong and argue the benefits of grappling kata.

You can't take me too seriously, I tend to think out loud - even while typing. But you can say the same thing about almost all athletics. The winter Olympics are coming soon, watch some pre-event. You'll see the athletes visualizing the upcoming event. Would you conceder that a form of a Kata, why not? Again, just throwing out conversation.

To be honest, I'm not really in a position to comment on kata. I haven't really had that much experience of it ... apart from when I was younger. However, I would consider the Ram Muay performed by Thai Boxers pre-fight to be similar to kata.

OK,
So here's an exercise for you. Visualization. Close your eyes. Put yourself inside the ring. You have a training partner. If that partner attacks what are you going to do? Now, it matters on the attack, I know. But that's the exercise. Imagine the match. Now once you are comfortable with that, physically, go thru the motions. Meaning, your partner (imagined) throws a lead arm jab, what would you do? Now do that in the air.
It's a form of TMA mental training, and it works.

I'm not doing TMA though. And if someone throws a punch/jab at me I certainly wouldn't do a rising block in walking stance for example.
If people get a lot out of kata then that's cool. However, I can't see how it would help my grappling training. I don't think many grapplers owe their success to grappling katas.
Do you think grapplers should create set grappling katas for their training?

If I knew more about grappling then I would be in more of a position to answer that. I can't even pretend I do. Maybe not set patterns (Kata's, Forms) But the visualization exercise still has merit. You're still working your mind on the best technique for the situation.
