hey guys, hopefully some of you guys will make it down to the bottom of the main page to read this. anyway, lately i've been doing a lot of remodeling at my place, finishing the basement and such, and was thinking it would be nice to have a nice room just for practicing karate. it wouldn't even have to be a room in the house as i enjoy practicing outside too maybe a deck with a roof surrounded by a garden or something. have you guys ever thought about making something like this? if you could build your own dojo what would it be like? ;D maybe i'll steal some of your ideas when the time comes.

I would love to have a home Dojo, at present I have a small gym with a heavy bag in my garage and a large decked area in my back garden for some Kata practise.
If I could have my own home Dojo, I think all I would want is a large enough space, with good quality mats and someware to hang a bag.

Well outdoors is not much of an option in the UK.
For me I'd like a wooden building, with a nice sprung wooden floor. Space for kata (and a few friends would be great!), a heavy bag, and some of my gym equipment (rowing machine, exercise bike etc).

A sprung floor is usually a wooden floor with an underlay that allows some movement, google has lots of answers.
My private dojo is 15 metres by 30 metres, that is a rough gestimate. It has a good wooden floor, although it isn’t sprung, I have access to all my gym equipment etc. I don’t have mirrors but I do have a lot of glass so natural light is not a problem I use video to review kata…a few chums to train with would be good but most people have clubs to go to when they have free time.

If you did a stamp onto a normal floor there is no give on a sprung one there is some give, likewise for a sweep. On some floors it may not be that noticeable and the benefits may not be as great.

I should think that one would be better actually buying those jigsaw mats rather than worrying about the floor itself, after all it is still a very hard surface.

mats would definately be a requirement as well as a good place to store them i'm sure.

A sprung wooden floor will be easier on the leg joints, and less likely to damage a toe than on mats. Random.... how did you get such a big personal dojo? ?
