Now this is a Karate competition format I like... youtube.com/watch?v=RMjGQk-k2ZALike knockdown but with head contact head butts and groundfighting! That's similar to what we do in Shidokan but we don't headbutt or punch to the head. Damn I'd like to compete in something like that.

Nah....I bet everyone involved went to work the next day and didn't get any funny looks due to black eyes, split lips and the like. Although I bet a few had trouble with the stairs and a head-ache or three. Head gaurds can be a double edged sword can't they. Granted they offer good protection so you can hit to the head a bit harder without getting injuries. But sometimes thay can make knock outs easier to get due to the increased target area to hit and the increase in torque when the head is hit from the side.

Yep, a few people absolutely zonko on that clip.
What did interest me was than on some occasions, after they had taken someone down, they then mimed punching and stamping. I've seen that in a couple of kyokushin clips too. Are strikes on the floor illegal?

Not sure...I've never fought "pure" Kyokushin. I know that in our sparring if you get a sweep or throw that leaves you standing put your opponent down you need to follow with a finish to have it properly "scored". Like the sort of downward punch you get in regular Karate sparring after a leg sweep. It seems that they've taken that a stage further and encourage simulating a finish on the ground with stamps. Seems a good plan to me. We (Shidokan) have a time limit on clinching (about 5 seconds) and a time limit on ground fighting (5-10 seconds depending if anyone is attempting a submssion). We don't strike on the ground and it seems that they don't either although I'm not 100% on the rules they use.

i would imagine that striking someone that is on the ground would be pretty dangerous, for example if you've got someone on the ground and strike them in the ribs which are now supported and have less give certainly they would break easier right? so maybe it's a safety concern...just a guess.

I agree with that. I also think that striking on the ground is the least "accepted" part of the MMA competition format. I think many people find it un-sportsmanlike. Nothing like it exists in more accepted arts like Judo and karate. Striking on the ground is the first thing to go when full pro rules MMA gets watered down or the last thing that gets added when trad arts try and and go into MMA.
