I think everyone should do a motorbike course, there is nothing guaranteed to make you more observant and careful than when you realise how vulnerable motorcyclists are. I have a problem with this. Motorcyclists are vulnerable but so many of them drive like complete arses, take chances and generally push in and not observe the rules of the road. I know there are a lot of them out there who do but I know lots and lots don't seem to think speed limits, lane changes and any type of queuing applies to them.

The worst drivers are drunk drivers (male, female, young or old). They were the cause of 11 out of my 14 large accidents and statistics clearly indicate they are the #1 cause of road fatality. WW, you need to send me a picture of yoru car. Somewhere on there must be a subliminal "target" that says "Hey drunks...HIT ME!!!" Drunks are certainly the most dangerous people on the road...no argument there. I'd say cell phone users would be next, as I've had a lot of close calls from people that run red lights/stop signs, don't signal for turns, stop/turn suddenly, etc while chatting on a cell. Most states now, it is illegal to talk on a cell and drive. It is here also, but not enforced. We have a local cell provider that gives unlimited local calling for $29.95/mo, so every kid in the area has a cell and talks constantly on them. Talking about riding horses on the roads, around here isn't so much of a problem, as we have TONS of space in Montana to ride in. Myself, I hve a friend with Arabian and quarter horses and we go riding up in the mountains now and then. Pack a lunch, head out in the morning over the mountain and you won't see a house, car, telephone pole or person all day! Gotta love it! ;D I've been to the UK twice ('99 and thsi past Christmas) nd you'd have to be nuts to ride a horse on the roadway around there I think. It's bad enough to drive at car!

Driving in Italy is mental. Thankfully, I've only ever been a passenger in a car in Italy, never had to actually drive over there myself.
I've driven in Ghana, now that is one crazy country! I think that every driver in Accra just shuts their eyes, goes for it and hopes for the best. Scary stuff.

why is it that it is illegal (and people have been prosecuted) for driving and eating an apple or drinking water but smokers seem to be allowed to puff away with no penalty?

So I'm a passenger in my girlfriends car yesterday going shopping. We approach a roundabout. She takes that roundabout similar to the way I have described. She is in the left hand lane but cuts across the right hand lane to reach the first exit. Lazy steering basically. I look round and see someone in the right hand lane about 5 foot behind us. I say "You can't do roundabouts like that..you really cut that guy up". My girlfriend said this...and I kid you not...."I didn't cut him up...he was behind me". She's quite an intelligent woman (doing a second degree, secondary school teacher, independant and all that) and even she doesn't understand how to take a roundabout without cutting someone up. So what chance do dumb women have? She doesn't even understand what cutting someone up even is. She thinks it is OK to suddenly go into a lane 5 foot in front of someone without indicating and that that isn't gonna scare them and make them slam on their brakes. We argued and I came out of it as the bad man criticising her driving!!!!

well I don't know about anyone else, but I'm convinced now I've read one example of a female driving badly amongst the millions on the road....

Heh heh, I dunno whether to "bow" or "punch" you for that comment! ;D
I have to say I know what you mean about the roundabout - my mum drives like that all the time and insists nothing is wrong with it. Huh.
