We're not normally a dojo that does a lot of flashy and fancy stuff (we're more a groin-kickin' and eye-gougin' kind of place...) but last Saturday we had a bit of fun towards the end of class.
We'd done lots of 'serious' SD and PP stuff for about an hour (plus warm ups and basics before hand) , so Sensei let us have a go at some fancy kicks as a one-off.
We did lots of different jumping, spinning and flying kicks as well as a bit of XMA type flipping. The kids did that, I can flip pancakes but not myself! lol
This is the first time in all the time I've been going to that dojo (about 5&1/2 years) that I've done most of those kicks. I've never needed them before and shall never need them again...but it was a good laff...
Just thought I'd share it with you.

I wish I could do some seriously flashy kicks. Not for my karate necessarily and definitely not for self-defence, but just so I could look cool.
Heh! Some hope - I never even learnt to cartwheel. *shame*

I'd hurt myself, severely!

How high can everyone comfortably kick? I can kick jodan with no problems - when I partner the kids! ;D

lol, I nearly did hurt myself! After attempting a flying side kick and almost rupturing something I decided to leave it alone and stick to kicks I can do (like kicking someone in the ankles, lol).
It was fun watching the kids though. They seemed to enjoy it, especially when Sensei got a few of us adults to kneel down and did jumping and flying kicks over our heads.
It was good to have a change and do something completely different for once, but I don't think I'd like to go to a dojo that emphasised flashy stuff all the time.

Jodan, if sparring the 7 dwarfs! ;D
I suppose if I tried hard enough I could get Jodan but comfortably, chudan.

I can kick to my own head height, but seen as I'm only a short-arse in the first place then that isn't much of an achievement... When I partner up with Ed at my dojo it's really like little and large. He's a rugby player and about 9 foot tall (well, about 6'5" tall) and I'm just about 5'2" on a good day... He always jokes that my Jodan kicks are somewhere around his knee level and my Chudan kicks are to his ankles... Still, at least I can get through doorways without bashing my head...even if I do have to ask people in the supermarket to get me things off the top shelf.

I'm 6ft3, people hate getting partnered with me.

Ok, I could probably kick to Aefibird's head without much worry, might have to stop a bit short on andym though.

That's not a bad thing, I prefer dead arms to broken noses! ;D

Yeah, true.
Actually, I once did that. We were doing some one-step sparring and I countered a Jodan mawashigeri by dropping to the floor and kicking their groin. Application courtesy of Unsu kata! On reflection, a different counter-strike would have been more practical, but heigh-ho, you live and learn...

Top notch, it'd take me about a week to get on the floor.... ;D

lol, I can get down on the floor easily. I use that little-known and secret karate technique known as "fal ling o ver". It's the getting back up that I find harder!!
