Same style, different politics?
I've been reading the shotokai web site and their view on the matter is interesting, as far as they are concerned, the shotokan shotokai division is political. Shotokan started by some of Funakoshi's students (became the JKA) who wanted to take karate in a competition direction. Shotokai remained far more traditional. They also say that Funakoshi was the director of Shotokai when he died and had no affiliation with Shotokan, disapproved of the whole thing.

Same style, different politics? That statement could probably be said about most of the various karate styles...

Is this about Egami's Shotokai? I think there is another Shotokai established by Asai. I was very impressed when I read the description about master Egami. He researched what would be the most effective tsuki after finding many Karatekas' "mighty" tsuki didn't work to him. His conclusion was to be soft and fluid, hence the katas in Shotokai are performed like Taichi. I also hear that students in Shotokai are not allowed to do any free sparring simply because their technique is too dangerous..

I also hear that students in Shotokai are not allowed to do any free sparring simply because their technique is too dangerous.. This sounds like those stories that people told in the early 70's when MA became popular, like having to take your shoes and socks off and having to warn people 3 times before a fight. www.shotokai.com/This is the top google for shotokai and as it is not the only opinion it is one. It also talks about the progression through kumite.

I also hear that students in Shotokai are not allowed to do any free sparring simply because their technique is too dangerous.. I think it's more to do with them being against karate competitions. Philosophically because Funakoshi (Shoto) was and practically, not because it's dangerous but because if you do it a lot you're training youself to fight to competition rules, not necessarily a good way to respond when attacked in the street. There's a shotokai club on the north side of Glasgow, the more advanced students there definitely do practice free sparring, though free means any technique so they have to be controlled.

It also sounds like a load of SLOB LOCK Indeed. There's nothing like a bit of humility is there? And as I said, even if true, the argument is counterproductive. OK, so you've built up speed and power, that's good... oh but you have absolutely no control over what's going on with your body and obviously can't judge distancing. Hmmm maybe a few more drills in those areas would be beneficial. Anyway, I don't want to label an entire style because of a piece of hearsay, so I will just say that ANY school that comes out with something like that would have alarm bells ringing in my head.
