Great post PASmith. I agree. If you confront someone with a knife you have to realise that you are going to get cut. Whether it's a cut on the arm or a slice across the throat will hopefully be chosen by your training. Training with real knives is probably counter-productive (and dangerous).

You see I'd take out the "probably" and the brackets such is my view on this. I really can't see a way of partner training with a live blade that offers anything of value. At a push the live blade might induce some adrenalin in the defender but the drill would have to be so controlled that the actual training would suffer. Far better to induce adrenalin by others means (aggression training, hard sparring, animal days etc) and keep the knife training hard and realistic but with training blades.

i agree with you 100%. i was just thinking, considering there are people out there who say that it isnt real if its not a live blade, do they also do partner work using real guns with live rounds? its partly for the same reason that karate when its at a high enough level cannot be practiced full contact, people would die if you gave it your all. in order to introduce adrenalin all you need to do it use a blunt wooden or rubber weapon shaped like a knife. if you got that stabbed in your side or scraped down your face or neck it would hurt enough to produce adrenalin. and even then could be lethal if your nor careful.

Yeah I agree, but I can see that during a demo etc. real knives may be introduced in order to make it more impressive.

the thing is, if you have real knives, there is a very high chance of someone being seriously injured. either you dont train hard, taking away the reality of the whole scenario or you do train hard and someone is dead. if you are training at full speed you always get a couple of knocks, it happens every night in training. if its live blades then its a bit more than a wee knock.
