Gradings are a good way to test how you react with a bit of pressure on you.

With us, and don't tell the color belts this, but if a colored belt is invited to test - they have already passed. We judge them, as instructors, outside the test, with out their knowledge. At testing we are actually judging ourselves as instructors through them.
Black Belts, on the other hand, have a 50% chance at testing, and are invited as well.

how do you know you have improved without grading? especially if the grading panel is from outside your club. you may know your teacher is happy but that doesnt mean others will be satisfied with what you do. if your instructor feels its time for you to grade then it is time assuming your instructor is competent.

Well, the grading they are talking about is all official sounding.......I would say a competant instructor could easly tell you haow you did.
