Well, I decided a few weeks ago to have a good clearout of all my old gi. I gave a couple away and sent some to the charity shop, so that I was just left with 2 (well, 3 technically, but I can't fid where I've put the Tokaido!). Unfortunately the gi gods have conspired against me this past fortnight and both of these gi have met with accidents. *sigh* On one the sleeve has been torn where it joins the main part of the jacket. It was only a fairly small tear until I put it in the washing machine... and now there is more hole than gi. On the other gi we were goind some throws and the outer ties pulled off. Because there were only one set of ties holding it together the inner ties have been pulled and they're only just hanging on. Has anyone ever re-sewn the ties back onto a gi before? How sucessful was it and did it manage to last any length of time? Should I try it or should I just go to the charity shop and see if I can buy an old gi back...?

Yeah, but it will be just my luck that they will have sold them... :/
I'll probably go to training next week and see someone at karate in my old gi, that they've bought from the charity shop! lol

it'll work great, if it doesn't...bring it over here and i'll take a look at it for you. just make sure you have a thimble, pushing a needle through a couple layers of a heavy weight gi can really test your peserverance.

Well the ties are back on.... but I've not dared wear it for training yet! ;D My sewing skills aren't up to much and I think that I've probably not done a very good job. There was certainly plenty of swearing involved at any rate.

I've had to admit defeat. Either my sewing efforts aren't very good or the thread I used wasn't strong enough (or probably a combo of both), but the ties have torn off again. *sigh* I need a new gi...

Yeah, my washer ate my gi too - that's why I have one (although it's mended now) with a torn off sleeve.

Anytime I've broken a tie on a gi, I just wear it "as is". What's the problem with doing that?
