When we come to put the videos of the kata onto the website I would like some idea of what formats you would like, and whether you would sacrifice download time over quality.
Let us know!
Some formats: Realplayer Windows Media Player QuickTime Shockwave
or anything else you can suggest.

I'd vote for Windows Media Player or Real Player formats.
Yes, I'd be happy to have a longer download time if it meant I'd be getting a better quality video.
Too often I've downloaded kata video's, only to find that they're poor quality and you can't tell if the person is doing a mawashi-geri or a gyaku-zuki! (lol, not quite as bad as that, but you get the gist).

I'd say an "universal" format. I'm kinda upset when I have to install loads of codecs just to see a minute of a clip. And to not be able to distinguish anything I'd vote for larger files, but more quality

I have some footage to go up asap. Unfortunately the reason it is taking so long is that I need to find some good editing software to chop it up into nice sized snippets.

I would suggest the mpg, mpeg format. That is universal that all media players can handle, and despite of the wishes of Bill Gates not everyone uses Windows. Avi is a bit nicer but not all media players handle it.

DOWN WITH WINDOWS! (and shotokan) I'm gonna ignore that last comment about a certain karate style....

If you encode using the XVID compression codec (which is open source) - you can have around (if you are clever with doing it) 600mins of video coming in at under 500MB - or 20 mins of video at about 15MB without losing any recognisable quality.
The XVID codec is 600k roughly and integrates automatically with Windows Media Player on install.

media player all the way! mpg files work fine on Windows Media Player out of the box, no modifications. Microsoft keep changing the WMV format which means everyone has to keep updating their software and video codecs (12MB download each time) to play the latest formats being put up on the web sites. I'd personally like to see the theora (www.theora.org) format used, it's patent, licence and royalty free, but mpeg's an ISO (http://www.iso.ch/) standard.

Anything I use has to be cheap (read: free). I've spent, and continue to spend a lot of money updating the site and have not had much return on it. I think the paid links netted me about £5! W00t! It didn't help that Paragon Martial Arts went down and they lost all details of money earnt up to them. Bah! I don't mind spending money on this site, as it's a labour of love but anything free is always welcomed!

I'll press a few links when I visit then, the google ads are usually fairly well targeted anyway. Hmm punchbags... Well, call me cheap, call me principled but all the software I use is free. As in the authors give it away, including source code. I don't use pirated software and the commercial stuff is too expensive. e.g. Video editing: www.jahshaka.com/Web page editor: www.w3.org/Amaya/Web application server: www.zope.org/If there's something specific you might need, this site has a pretty definitive list of the free and open source software around. The name sounds a bit... dodgy ... but it isn't: freshmeat.net/
