I've been suffering from niggling shoulder pain for the last couple of weeks, which over the last two days has really started to cause me trouble - including finding it hard to change gears in my car. If it carries on I will go and see a doctor, but before then I was wondering if anyone had any thought on gentle exercise to help strengthen it up without exacerbating the problem?

I use a Tens machine on some aches and pains I have, best thing I ever bought, my physio put me onto them, you can get different ones with different levels etc. Get one and give it a try, chiropractors use something similar as well. www.bodyclock.co.uk/

Hmmm I've heard good things about these. Might well be worth a try, could also be effective on my recurring lower back problems.

I started with lower back and hip (could be technical but can't spell it) get one with as many pads as possible, once you get them in the right place you should notice the difference fairly quickly, if not then it is time to see the doctor.

Go see a GP. MA people are not qualified to comment other than to sympathise. The longer you let it lie, the worse it will be long term.

Yeah, I did say I will see a GP if it carries on, but I am going to look at one or two other options first, just to see if I can do anything to ease it without clogging up my already busy GP surgery

TENS machines are bloomin' marvellous. My arthritic mother uses one regularly and swears by it.

It isn't about being qualified or not but about sharing good ideas, methods and alternatives to sitting in a waiting room full of poorly people spreading 'orrible germs everywhere. After all it is only advice and it is down to the individual what they do with the advice personally I can empathise with shoulder back and neck pain. However, I see a chiropractor regularly as well as an osteopath, I would try and see one of these before a GP, unless your medical insurance requires a referral, as they deal regularly with aches and pains like this, where as a GP will put you on a long waiting list to have someone prod and poke it about.

I did get a small TENS machine in the end. I'm not sure it helps but it's great for exercising the muscles when I'm feeling lazy ;D

My ex swore by her TENS machine when she was having Daniel!
Me being a cynic thought it was all in the mind!

Not sure where you are from random, but in the UK we have a slightly different medical system to some countries. Sure there's no harm in advice, I've offered my own here on many occasions. My first response is always, to go and see a professional. Especially as many members of MA forums are kids pretending to be older, or in posession of knowledge they will never have. If I didn't care, I'd say nothing. I'm thinking of going to a Chiro for shoulder trouble myself, as my collar bones keep dislocating. I notified my GP about the problem over a year ago, and I've still had no treatment, but results vary dramatically up and down the UK.

Andy, Random is from Yorkshire, which is (just) part of the UK If I went to the doctor for every niggling pain I pick up I would have been struck off years ago. Don't worry though, I am sensible enough to know when advice from a forum isn't enough, and go and book my appointment. As it is, my shoulder is already a LOT better, whether it was the TENS or just natural healing I'm not sure, but it has saved my taking up a time slot in my already over subscribed GP surgery.

I've said this before elsewhere, but it's worth saying again. A lot of those little niggly injuries that you think have gone away can come back to haunt you many years later, as I know to my cost (both elbows, both shoulders a knee a hip and spine). Something I, in my non-medical advisory capacity, would reccomend is Omega3 and Glucosamine Sulphate. Lube up those joints and keep em lubed while you are in the most active phase of your life You can thank me in 20 years time, just address all cards to; Bed 7 Glasgow Hospital for the self abused cripple.
