Anyone seen this film (Ohn Bak)?
I watched it last night, what a corker. It feels like a proper martial arts film. Stupid fight scenes, stupid stunts just because they can, dodgy plot etc.
They claim to use no wires, no CGI etc and no stunt doubles and so for the first time in what seems like ages there is a return to talent over special effects. The fight style is supposed to be Thai Boxing, and so there's a lot of elbow and knee strikes, some thigh kicks etc, though of course he throws in some proper flash moves when he wants, somersault kicks and the like.
Could this be the best martial arts film since "The King Of the Kickboxers" with Loren Avedon and baddie Billy Blanks ? (That wasn't a serious question by the way).

Ong bak is an EXCELLENT film - a must-see for all martial artists. The techniques in it are amazing and no Wire-Fu either.

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are a lot of Traditional Muay Thai moves in there that you rarely if ever see in the ring these days.
It'd been better if it'd had outtakes like the Jackie Chan movies though. There had to be some painful mistakes made in the process of getting that choreography right. Oh, and the version I saw had unintelligible subtitles and no english soundtrack, but I got the gist of what it was about. The guy moves beautifully. Right, I'm off to jump over a car. ;D

While the fight scenes in Ong Bak were pretty good the story was utter, utter rubbish. I basically forwarded it until I saw a fight, watched that and then forwarded it to the next one etc.
I'm getting increasingly annoyed with Asian cinema and its inability to tell a convincing story or even sometimes portray proper human reactions and motivations.
A couple of exceptions to that...
Kung Fu hustle..Damn good film that didn't take itself seriously and was just completely mental. The bit with the fat bloke and the throwing knife was hilarious. The bit with the two musical assassins was cinematic fight ballet.
The Twilight Samurai...Starring the guy that played the badass samurai in "The Last Samurai" in a completely contrasting role. Very subtle, human and with proper human motivations. The fights are well choreographed but realistic and not the focus of the film. Well worth a look.

Kung Fu Histle was good. Even more barmy than Shaolin Soccer, which I loved.
