Anyone bought (and read!) the new Harry Potter book?
I was one of those sad individuals who went to Tesco on the Friday at midnight waiting for a chance to be one of the first to own it...
Took it home & stayed up all night reading it straight through. Got about 2-3 hours sleep and then got up again for a knackering training session. Was totally zonked on that day.
Anyway, I like the book. Thought it was her best yet.

Excuse me while I clime up on my moral high horse.
J K Rowling made more than enough money from the first couple of books and movies to be able to virtually give this last book away, yet she continually exploits the imagination of children (parents have to buy the book, take them to the film) .
I am with terry Prattchett on this, I couldn’t find it in the net, but he gave her(JK) a right good verbal slapping recently.
Give me Discworld over Hoggwarts anytime.
And if one wanted real fantasy try the gormenghast trilogy.

I'm about half way through the book, and I must admit it's a lot better that the previous one. I had to wait for my wife and then my eldest son to finish reading it before I could get my hands on it.
I've tried discworld books and really enjoyed the humor in them but found them difficult to get along with, I know I'm in the minority as quite a few family and friends really love discword.

*Hides from random* Anway, I'm a book addict. My house is a library with a hanging heavy bag in it... TP's Dicworld series is cracking. Going Postal and Nigh**Censored**ch are my 2 faves. My and a gang of mates made an absolutely mental version of Lords & Ladies for our GCSE Drama project. I was Granny Weatherwax, The Bursar and an elf, although not all at the same time, obviously... I don't think the examiner had seen anything like before. He say there with his mouth open in shock for most of it. Yes, the Gormenghast trilogy is great. One of my claims to 'fame' is that I know one of the people who was in that when it was made for the BBC fairly recently. random, if you're into those sort of books have you read "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel"? Fantastic book. Can't remember the author of the top of my head. Sorry.

Hmm, interesting. It appears that the word N i g h t w a t c h becomes censored by this board....

Nigh**Censored**ch Night watch.
Norrel is a Yorkshire man so they have to be worth a look. Thanks for the tip.

I think I can see why it is censored if the board recognises certain words as offensive, I am not going to type others just to test the theory?

Terry Pratchett rules!
I've never read any of the Harry Potter books, I'm more than content watching the films, and I feel the films might be ruined if I read the books first and I'd have too many preconceptions.

Never a truer word spoken. Has anyone read any of his Discworld kids books? If not, then do so! They're fanstasic and, much like The Simpsons, work on more than one level. There's stuff in there that no kids will get. "A Hatful of Sky" is my fave, but they're all great. BTW, anyone know anything about the plans to make a Discworld film? I know they made the cartoons a while back, but it was rumoured that 'they' were gonna produce a live-action full length movie.

Must have missed all of this, but is Terry Pratchett giving away royalties for his books to charity or something? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he cash in on a Discworld Video Game quite some time ago? I've bought a lot of his books, but his first two were the best IMHO. Re the new Harry Potter, I enjoyed it, but the ending was a bit unsatisfactory. I don't like to be left on a cliffhanger when I probably have to wait another year till I find out what happens.

Discworld Noir was the best out of the Discworld games IMO.

Having to wait another year to find out what happens kind of illustrates my point.
I have also noticed an increase in retail price of other books in this genre; it appears others are also cashing in.

It's always the problem with books though innit. I've been through exactly the same thing in the past, with David Eddings (Mallorean series etc), Robin Hobb (Assassin series) and most recently Stephen King (The Dark Tower). None of them gave their books away though? To be honest, in my mind, Terry Pratchett has turned out a lot of re-juggled/successful format crap over the years. A lot of 'samey' books.
