Yes, as is flooring. I'd suggest trying to go for something with a bit of a garden so that you can practise outside if the weather is (ha!) nice. This is the west of Scotland. It's the bit just far enough north of Ireland that all of the weather from the Atlantic lands on it. To give you an idea, when I moved down to London I used to get comments and odd looks from colleagues about my habit of carrying a jacket around with me in mid summer, 30°C temperatures. I was completely unaware I did it and I wasn't even sure why I did it myself, it felt like some sort of a security blanket, I just didn't feel comfortable not having one with me. Anyway, it took about 5 years to get out of the habit and i figured out why on a summer visit to my parents. Glorious sunshine, had been for a day or two, everyone, and I mean everyone was either wearing or carrying a jacket. Where abouts do you want to move to? Somewhere nice but cheap, other than that not too fussed. I had the bright idea of looking up areas in Glasgow which were getting redevelopment funding, the government publish a list of postcodes which are classed as poor areas in need of investment, they're exempt from stamp duty and developers get other tax incentives for building and improving the areas. There's a load of development going on at the moment. The list was quite long, 50 or 60 of them I think but WTF do I know about postcodes so I got a postcode map to see where they were, coloured them in with a hilighter. I gave up as around 75% of Glasgow turned pink.

Here's a different spin, where would be the ideal place to live? If I had loads of money I would live in the German Alps, in a huge log cabin, surrounded by lots of pine trees and by a mountainside lake. Y'know, if you scrubbed German Alps, thought Carpathian mountains in Romania you might be able to afford it today. And how cool would a remote log cabin in Transylvania be? They'll be joining the EU in 2007, their property prices will go mad. Already started: e.g. tinyurl.com/8y7h5
