I went to see the new Jet Li film Hero last night.
I'd recommend it.
It's in the same sort of vein as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , but even better.
It's a beautiful and colourful film, very artistsic with some great swordfighting sequences in it, which always makes me happy! I'm a little obsessed with swords... ;D

I went to see Hero last night. It is certainly visually stunning but BORING AS HELL!!!! Far too arty farty for a martial arts film, I like my martial arts films to have cheesy plots, really bad dubbing and fantastic martial arts action. I'd recommend almost anything else. Very disappointed Martyn

Yeh I too was disappointed with this film. Bits of it I liked quite a bit, but it did seem to drag on.
I liked the fight with the leaves, that was wooshtastic.
Crouching Tiger is much better I think.

Getting off the subject a little here, one top-quality film I went to see last weekend was Saw.
It only got average reviews in some sections of the media, but I thought it was good - like a combination of The Bone Collector and Seven.
Not one to watch if you're squeamish, though!

Reviews cannot be trusted. I went to see The Village a couple of months ago because the reviews had been raving. OMG WHAT A PILE OF STEAMING POO! It was AWFUL! My friend had to elbow me halfway though to keep awake!

I've seen Hero. Really good flick. The archery attack scene reminded me of summer in Alaska (if you substitute the arrows for mosquitos).

i must have missed all the good bits because apart from it being very beautifully shot, it bored me to death, ritual suicide was a real option by the end of the film. house of the flying daggers is better, that is until the end sequence of the film where everyone dies and still manages to come back to life several times, i was left with the thought....will this bitch ever die.....and was glad when she did.......my advice leave 10 mins before the end and then act out your own ending with friends in the lobby, trust me the other people will leave the film and come watch you

Good one! I liked House of Flying Daggers (especially the fight in the trees) but I do agree that the ending was a little (or a lot!) drawn out.

I bought "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" for some almost give away price many, many moons ago. I only got around to watching it the other week when I was ill. About halfway through the disk crashed - I have to say I was almost relieved! I found a lot of it tedious in the extreme.
Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2 on the other hand were cool - GROSS, but cool - but I would say warrant a second viewing to appreciate to the max.

CTHD does suck pretty hard. It's not a good enough film in its own right to be good, nor can it cut it as a martial arts film because it's all on wires.
Are there any karate films other than The Karate Kid? I have SHELVES of kung fu films, and the only ones I'd say are karate are the Bloodsport series (just a tad budget, although no.1 was Mr Van Damme).
Failing karate films, Jackie Chan - Drunken Master is possibly THE GREATEST martial arts film in the world. Old school, and the plot is loose at best, but it amazes me EVERY time I watch it, and that's a fair few now.
