Try No Retreat, No Surrender (also known as Karate Tiger). It's got Jean Claude Van Damme in it and is quite possible the WORST Martial Arts film in the history of the known universe...
Having said that, you should watch it because it's soooo bad that it's funny. Check out the amazing moving punchbag in one scene!

Hey I was going to mention "No Retreat,No Surrender" too. Amazing. The ghost of Bruce Lee appears to help a kid learn to beat up Jean Claude Van Damme.
It was a very low budget experiment by oriental film-makers, they wanted to test the Western film market with their martial art films so they used this film as the experiment. It was a hit (within the martial arts circles) and opened the gates for more martial art films.

Just watched Hero, I enjoyed v. much. Mind you O do like Zhang Ziyi, who was also in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. As I said I did enjoy Hero - how many times did Falling Snow have to kill Broken Sword !, and for so many different reasons.
If you want to see a very gory, badly dubbed & action packed martial arts film, watch anyone of the 'Babycart' series. They are terrific - not karate I know, but still lots of fun. " of them were cobbled together into 'Shogun Assassin' some years ago. They are very gory.
Happy viewing.

For me Akira Kurosawa is the king of martial arts movies, anyone who hasn't already seen his great movies is missing out, old school martial arts movies rock!!!!!! have to admit owning a copy of no retreat, no surrender, quality acting lol

Akira Kurasawa's flims arent actually martial arts films as such. He depicts feudal Japanese history & culture very well but they aren't in the same vein as Bruce Lee's films etc
No retreat, No surrender is a fine fine film - however I remember seeing one years ago where the lead character's name was something like "Sho Nuff" and when you became a master you got "The Glow" whichwas a bity like the ready brek outline, only gold ;D
I have been striving for that ever since!

You are talking about 'TheLast Dragon', I think and it was the villain who was called Sho Nuff - the Shogun of Harlem !
Ready brek is not the answer
Getting back to Kurosawa films, the best martial arts scene I have ever seen was in one of his films. In 'Yojimbo' the hero goes through the whole film getting into swordfights, and whilst being very good, not very graphic. In the final 5 mins of the film, the hero - a man with no name, being challenged to a duel, he initially declines, then has to fight. The scene lasts about 3-5 seconds, it is literally a samuari quick draw, again very gory. The film is in black and white - made in the 50's. A fistful of dollars was based on it.
Bye for now

If you're wanting true martial arts film quality... then watch Tongan Ninja.... It's the sort of film my dojo would make if we had the £££... Kung Pow is also another fun, spoof MA flick. Great for a night in with plenty of beers.

I was thinking of Tongan Ninja, but I didn't know how well you guys would take it Flippin Aussies. Kung Pow is an excellent film. Taken from Snake in the Monkey's Shadow, I think, but well worth watching just for the cow. I have No Retreat, No Surrender in the post, so I'll critque it by the end of the week Also got Fearless Tiger recently. Has an Indian star, which is unusual, and is quite poor. Again, worth watching for the slightly-cockney police sergeant who is RUBBISH

I saw Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai last night. It's not bad, actually - I thought it was going to be worse than it was.

No... but I was bored and thought I'd mention it anyway. Fun to watch if you like a film about Smurai principles.

That was The Last Dragon. The hero of that story was actually named Bruce Leroy. Sho Nuff was the villian. One of the cheesier movies I've seen. Good thing I saw it on tv and didn't pay to see it.
