Ah yes they were talking about this on the radio this morning and the need for better technology to help refs.
In my nerdy way, I thought "ah, they need a ball with a microchip in it and then you could work out exactly where it was on the pitch".
That'll do it.
And if anyone nicks the ball you can go around their house and ask for it back.

Yeah right - football where you carry the ball in your hands....did you guys, Amercians or people from Rugby ever study biology?

Can we please stop talking about which sport is best and go back talking about a microchip in the ball, that didn't get the attention it deserved.
I thought about it more this morning and have decided that if you're to go hi-tech, then like the trainers of the same name you shouldn't compromise.
I'm thinking: - The exact spacial co-oridinates of the balls location. - Sensors to show where abouts the ball got hit, and how hard it got hit. - How fast it's going - How fast it's spinning. - Air pressure
That pedigree of statistic can only be good for the game.

How would you get a microchip in a hollow ball? And even if you found a way using a beehive type of cell structure to get the microchip in the middle of the ball I am not sure how it would measure if part of the ball has crossed the line etc. and how hard it had been kicked, unless yiou had a webbing style structure coming off the chip and around the outside of the ball. I am surprised that football has not yet introduced the monitors into the games, in the way rugby has. The only problem is with the current trend towards diving a game could take days! Meh! Stricter penalties against diving then I guess would soon stop that.... like public flogging or something. ;D

The chip gets suspended by a structure of ultra-light beams and struts, so it's held in the centre of the ball. Since you know the correct diameter of the ball, you can work out whether a part of the ball has crossed a line or not.
Yes to do the "how hard has it been kicked" vital statistic you'd probably need more than just a microchip, but it's worth it I say.

[/quote] The exact position and speed of the ball won't be affected by Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (The position and momentum of a particle cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrarily high precision) will it? Cos that would probably just cause more arguments ;D Mick

IMO, they should introduce video refs like in cricket (A PROPER GAME!! lol) or rugby (Another PROPER game!). ;D Actually, I like football (soccer to any non-Brits reading this!). However, the team that I support doesn't actually seem to play 'football' - they go for the "standing around watching the opponents score" method of sport.

With Exeter holding Manchester United to a draw there will now be a rematch at St.James Park. Driving to work will become so much more hideous, and I was supposed to be going out in Exeter that weekend. Congrats to Exeter (and as a Torquay fan that chokes me ;D) for a very impressive result. (After all this is the same Man Utd that Spurs couldn't beat! ;D ;D ;D ) Angela.

Well, there might have been several player differences but even so.... lads who play for a Premier league side not even being able to beat little ol' Exeter?? Personally I hope Exeter manage to give Man U a good trouncing! Vote for the underdog, that's what I say... that's why I support The Owls!
