How do people teach themselves / their students control? Do you have partner and single people drills? For example, I am your student and I want to practice kumite with correct distance/speed/control at home but I have no partner; what exercises would you recommend?

Practising control without a partner is extremely difficult as without a partner there is no actual need to control techniques if you see what I mean - this is one of the useful things about kata, practising serious techniques at full power.
IMO a partner is necessary

Well I have an idea for practicing control on your own. Start off with a punch bag and throw punches and kicks at at, aiming to just touch it and not actually start it swinging. Build up to moving around the punch bag, and not remaining static. Eventually start the punch bag swining and then move around it punching and kicking and still trying to keep the right control and distance.
What do you think?
