What's your opinion of children within Martial Arts? Should children be treated as little adults, their classes structured exactly the same or should their lessons be completely diffrent? Should children's lessons be centred more around 'fun' activities, or will that teach them to not take it seriously?
What are some of the exercises you teach the children to keep them absorbed in the lesson plan?

Hi Ange, Having visited my club, you know that it is 99% children. The classes are largely structured as most adult classes are but I will every so often throw in some games when we do stuff like padwork. For example I split the class into to teams with as even a grade split as possible. One member of each team (or myself and another adult) stands at the end of the dojo hollding a large pad with the rest of the team at the oposite end of the dojo. I tell them what technique I want them to do and them we do it in a sort of relay race. If a technique is not performed properly, the bag holder will call them back to do it again and this will affecvt the team. Losing team gets 10 pressups counted out by the winning team. This would be done a few times with a different technique on the bag each time. The kids like this as its fun, I like it as the running/pressups help their fitness, it works their technique and builds teamwork. Just my tuppence worth Martyn

I think for young children there needs to be a fun aspect, whilst still carefully balancing the respect/discipline aspects. Young children have short attention spans, it's not their fault, it is just nature. Any complicated training aspect needs to be followed with something a little more fun and light.
