To be honest I see a link to yet another thread on yet another forum discussing the same line of conversation as somewhat irrelevant (and often as not the same old names). In every discussion I've ever seen on this you will get the pro-kata and the anti-kata and never the twain will meet. IMO you're better off just letting the pro-kata people discuss the various aspects of kata that they want to and concentrating on the threads that interest you and your training. For example people that interrupt a thread on principles of kata with a statement that they think kata is useless blah blah blah, are extremely rude. People wouldn't tend to do that in a verbal conversation so why does it become ok to do it online? Personally I think people that do not see the pros of kata have missed the point, either because they've never done it or because they've been taught be someone that didn't understand it. Kata as a whole is far more than performance of repeated patterns. agreed. but i didnt do that. please look at the title of this thread. it invites members to say what they find least useful, and gives kata as a choice? lol, talk about touchy. you lot seriously need to lighten up, you'll get ulcers from the stress otherwise.

LOL, we're all light enough. It's just it's the same old story across pretty much every karate forum. Why come on a karate forum and then be surprised that there are a lot of advocates of kata around, or be surprised if people get touchy when you tell them their training is a waste of time

may i enquire what the purpose if this forum is, if not for open minded discussions? Open minded huh? That would suggest a receptive attitude to the opinions of others yes?

That's not true, I do want new members and a diverse opinion is always welcomed. My point is why be surprised that the majority on here will advocate kata? Your experience and opinions is entirely valid within a context, however I think it's also entirely flawed. But that's another thread... perhaps you should start a new thread about why kata is flawed in your opinion and training methods you would implement to replace it's removal. Educated and reasoned debates are what keeps forums ticking along

well that's good to hear. if it's all the same to you & bearing in mind my reception i wont bother starting a new thread to argue with the whole forum some more.
as for it being entirely flawed, i believe it was you asking on another thread about cross training Angela?
that is exactly what i started doing when i felt i had internalised everything combat-useful Kyokushinkai had to offer me. it was the start of a long evolution of what i almost consider "my own" style, comprised of a) only effective techniques gathered from (IMO, the cream of) various arts, and b) only the stuff that really worked well for me.
i believe cross training would open your eyes enormously. you are free to believe kata within one particular art is the key.
each to their own.

Yes I've questioned the idea of cross training, but to be honest I'm enjoying my karate too much at the moment to dedicate any time to anything else. Apart from the fact that at this current time karate is supplying me with what I want and anything else would be a distraction. Even if I did cross train it would be to learn from a different aspect, not necessarily because I felt there was something wrong with what I already do. Another tool in the toolbox is always a compelling idea though
