Here is a list of available weapons with some thoughts on them and some suggestions for targets. I’ve put in some Japanese terms. Feel free to discuss what I’ve put.
Arms:
Fist - Standard 2 knuckle punch. Powerful weapon, probably most used. Good for shots in to the stomach. May cause self injury if used to the head, but will usually get a good reaction. If wrist buckles when striking can cause injury.
Palm hand (teisho) – Base of palm, not fingers! Nice for strikes into face, or to redirect the face with a strike. If used properly can generate devastating power. May cause injury to fingers if not struck properly.
Back hand (uraken) – Using the wrist as the weapon, not the actual back of the hand, which contains lots of little bones that can be broken fairly easily. Could be used to swipe through the ribs. I personally find it hard to generate as much power with this one as I do with a punch or palm hand strike.
Fingers – Tips of fingers. Good for jabbing into the throat to get the gag reflex (Nukite style). Can also be jabbed into eyes or hooked up noses (eeww). Not a good idea to use on the body as it will probably damage the fingers.
Knife hand (shuto) – Because I am loathe to risk my fingers I prefer to use the outside of my forearm for a strike, rather than my hand, this is good for strikes into the neck. The outside of the fingers could be used as a strike to redirect the face.
Inside Forearm – As used in nagashi. Good for riding punches or kicks. Other than that I can’t see much application as a strike - is nice to grind into the neck in a headlock though.
Elbow (empi) – Powerful, strong weapon. Good for shots to the ribs, would also be very nasty to the face. Directional elbows can have awesome affects. Probably my favourite choice, for power, ease of use and the fact that it is quite hard to injure yourself whilst throwing an elbow.
Shoulder – With all the body’s weight behind it a shoulder barge can have a lot of power. It’s useful if trying to create distance from an opponent, but care needs to be taken that the head is not knocked.
Misc:
Head – Personally I feel that I would never use my head as I would be too scared of injuring myself. However a butt into the nose or cheek would be very painful for the opponent – as long as you don’t KO yourself at the same time!
Teeth – In a do or die situation it may be necessary one day to bite the opponent to get them off. It’s kind of horrible, but then again I’ve never been vaguely in a situation that would warrant it – perhaps if the situation was dire enough...
Legs (kicks) - I know that there are loads of different kinds of kicks but since I would not consider kicking above the waist most of the kicks have a similar purpose – mainly to come through the knees – preferably to either collapse the knees or to sweep the opponent of their feet. Possible problems with kicks are that they can be too telegraphed or that you miss your target and meet bone with bone, or foot with leg and then injure yourself. I find that kicks do not tend to come naturally to me – if left to my own devices I rarely tend to use my legs (other than a stamp on the opponent if they are already on the floor). For most people (me definitely included) kicks above the waist would be far too slow to be effective.
Knees – Nice for strikes into outer and inner thigh and groin. Powerful technique, not easy to spot coming in. Good technique for setting up other attacks.
