Something I feel I currently dislike, our warm up can sometimes be nearly half the lesson. Although I have no problem with doing sit ups, press ups and so on, I can do them at home, whereas the warm down is missing. What I would prefer is more karate instruction, fine tuning of familiar techniques and learning of new or varied stuff. Anyone else have this problem ? Hi, Ask your Sensei if he would consider doing what I do at the end of the lesson, every class member goes through an advanced Kata with shorter stances and at a slow pace. This does tend to dissipate the Lactic Acid and saves all the stiffness the morning after, the other advantage is that the lower Belts love the thought of preforming a Kata like Kanku-Dai. I also agree with Angela a Warm-up should be between 15 to 20 minutes. ADMIN NOTE: Quote fixed - AG

You need to warm up, you can't fine tune and learn new stuff with pulled muscles. You can do your own warm down straight after the class if needs be.

Yes warm ups are important, but extended one's are not necessary from a health point of view, and I would imagine one runs the risk of pulling mucles and joints if too much exercise is undertaken before one is allowed to stretch.

Our warm up is usually 15 - 20 mins. The usual push-ups, sit-ups, squat thrusts, star jumps then we move into stretching.

I don’t mind doing stretching, but I don’t want to do sit ups and press ups and that kind of thing, I pay for membership of a health club for that kind of work out, I pay to learn Karate, and that is what I want from my dojo, and that is what I get.

That's about how I feel Random, I agree that you need to stretch and do a few press ups, but we probably warm up for about 30mins. When I get the oppertunity I grab a black belt and go through some kata at the end, the benefit is two fold like Miffersy says.
