Mr precision might vaguely remember a doorman being stabbed through the heart at 'The Cathouse' in Glasgow a few years back, by an Albanian immigrant. I only moved back from London 6 months ago but looking at the hospital injury stats for weekends I can believe it completely. Sold my house this morning. Whoopeee!!! I'm Freee at last! I may be buggering off to New Zealand for a month or two in the near future. It's murder here. 1/3 of kids carrying which means 100% of thugs. No offence to bouncers or people who work doors but you're literally looking for trouble in that job, you know you're going to see it regularly. A chainmail vest might be a wise investment.

Funny you should mention that. I first came across Angela when I dived into a discussion with an experienced Karateka who didn't see understanding the difference between a blood and an air choke as important, so long as he came out on top. I was shocked and horrified at the same time. Isn't the difference about 60 seconds? I thought a blood choke (strangle) of the carotids took about 15 seconds to unconsciousness and a choke of the trachea about 60 seconds. Never tried either anything like that far, obviously. Excellent descriptions and pictures: www.shoshinryu.com/medical01.html

Good job on your research. Consider....... Blood choke = more immediate starvation of oxygen to the brain than air choke. Result = Brain Damage. An air choke will make someone tap out in a gym pretty quick, but a blood choke is less obvious to the victim (they can still breathe), can be effective in less than 15 seconds depending on the choke and the individual, and has less visible/physical signs of it's effectiveness.

Like most things in MA these are difficult to practice, I seem to remember the sleeper hold being used on the wrestling on a Saturday afternoon, although I doubt that you would get 4 x 3 minute rounds to soften your opponent up…if you get that close that you can put one of these techniques on…then an elbow somewhere soft will do the trick, also how do you stop them hitting you for those few seconds, interestingly I can not find anything on the net about these techniques on the MMA front…although I would be interested if anyone can find a link otherwise…or are they banned it is a fine line between unconsciousness and death?
I purposely took a job as door security for the very reasons stated…it does guarantee confrontation…although I would not want to do it now…not that there every was any rules...but they have changed.
I never take statistics too seriously (lies, dam lies etc) it is a serious problem I had to relieve a 14 yr old of this knife (can’t get it to load, but if you really want to see it PM me) Which the police officer that took it away was convinced it was used for carpentry…muppetry there I think. Fortunately I knew he wasn’t up for it, for me as well as him…Knives are scary, but there are scarier things out there, syringes for instance.
I can cope with the reality that I may get cut…and the risk is high…but the muck you can get injected with…that is really scary…and there are no statistics about this yet…not that I would believe it…46.5% of all stats are made up on the spot…

Psst, you seem to have doubled up your post; Cut n paste can be a beyatch sometimes eh?

Knives are scary, but there are scarier things out there, syringes for instance. [snip] 46.5% of all stats are made up on the spot… I heard it was 61.3%. £100 for a knife and needle proof vest says google, I'd consider that standard health and safety kit for people working as security.

Now now Mr P, you'll be putting Victor Morris out of business with that kind of talk.

Hi, No sexism intended but you ladies should actually be best equipped. the heavy handbag, then its contents, lets have a look Keys ( as stated before ), Sprays (lovely in their faces), Hair Brush ( the ones with a handle tapered to almost a point, thrust into the face, throat or neck) and just as good the humble Mobile Phone ( Held correctly and driven either on to the bridge of the nose or under the nose hitting the philtrum and taking out some of the top teeth, remember you can always buy a new phone). I know there's all this B******s about S.D. and the law but would you rather have a token sentence or be raped, dont forget we are a long time dead. In the end I think that everyone of us trains to keep ourselves safe. So lets use anything we have to facilitate this. That's my £0.02 anyway

I don't actually carry much in my handbag, and if I can get away with it prefer not to carry a bag at all.

All joking aside, this is a serious issue with me. I have been in actual self defense situations 3 times in my life. The first 2 times were probably my fault for being in places I should not have been in. The third situation involved a weapon (hand gun) in my own home. I can honestly tell you that taking time to think of legal ramifications in a situation of this sort will get you DEAD, fast. This was years ago when I lived in Texas. The bad guy (crack head) lived to tell about it as did I, after doing time in the county lock up and being charged with aggravated assult. The charges were dropped so no prison time for me. The bad guy was let loose scott free. I no longer live in Texas and will never go back. In Oklahoma where I live now we have a law that allows us to legally KILL an intruder with any means possible in our homes or on our private property. Tomahawk.

In the event of a bad situation occuring I will use everything I have, including teeth and nails (I'll have to grow some first). If there's anything lying around I can batter them with I'll utilise that too.
Disclaimer: We are talking worst case scenario here, not cos someone's called me fat-bum or something.
