Copied here for a greater viewpoint -
******
I currently have a "neighbor situation" which I am trying to resolve by letters to them and the council. It involves very loud nusience noise and some really disturbing behavior from next door but I am not going to go into the specifics here.
The reason for me posting this is that the family is not exactly the most, how do I put this, "well mannered" in the world and I have a feeling that the father might want to come round and have more than a word.
While I am not phsyically intimidated whatsoever (2 young kids, 13&15, mother and father) by this family, how far can I go if I am attacked to defend myself before it pushes the realms of excessive force?
I post this with real concern as I am very sure I will be placed in this position and I do not have much faith in the police attending on time.
Comments appriciated.

I believe that technically, if they approach you on your own doorstep over a greivance, they are committing a 'breach of the peace'. I'd call the police, or make sure there are witnesses, before opening the door to them.

Yes, make sure that someone is around if you decide to let the father in. Much better to have a witness there if he decided to be a numpty and have more than just a word with you. Failing that, just don't let him in at all. Refuse to speak to him as the matter is now with the council. You might do your case more harm than good if you say something to him (or have to defend yourself - especially if anyone on his 'side' finds out that you do Martial Arts).
Good luck with the situation, I hope that it is resolved soon.
