You can stop people walking all over you without violence. Fighting should be the last option, when even running has been ruled out....I don't do Karate just so I can hit people that really upset me by saying 'heeeyarrrrr' and making choppy motions with their hands, rising above it and walking away makes you the better person IMO

I agree with the rising above it and walking away attitude, to an extent. But I would never flat out run away. I would prefer to take a severe beating than suffer the humiliation of running from someone. I would never run from a fight. Ever.

At least I'll still have my pride and be able to walk the streets with my head held high.

That's if you can walk afterwards, of course.

Well doing martial arts can be considered to be living by the sword. What's the point in doing martial arts if your primary method of self defence is running away? Wouldn't you be better off joining a running club or sprint training 3 times a week?

And so it begins…
I have spent an awful summer dealing with ASB, I was even threatened with a knife, I never actually laid a finger on anybody and I am still here pride intact. Still no fortune.
Also I often get challenged to fight, often abused in the street, yet I rise above it, if someone is derogatory, be replying in kind I am just lowing myself to their level and saying that their moronic behaviour is acceptable because I do it too, quick answer grow up, ignore it build a bridge and get over it.
If you have to fight then fight if you can leg it why risk serious injury? Macho Hub Still.

Jones, I think when you get older you will have a similar attitude to the rest of us.

Well...... we did have someone interrupt class the other week to tell Sensei that the kids weren't doing stretching and they needed to do so, but the guy was a) p!ssed b) the dad of one of our students So, instead of giving him a good kicking, Sensei just escorted him out of the dojo but warned him never to do that again. I wasn't actually there when it happened (heared about it from the dojo gossips!) I'm gutted - the first time I miss class in ages and something funny happens! However, the chances of someone walking into a dojo and demanding a fight are slim-to-none. This isn't Hong Kong. This isn't the movies. Hopefully. we'd all rise above violence. Most of us on here know that martial arts aren't about violence. It just isn't the answer.
