Whilst discussing levels of contact in sparring, have you ever been hit? Have you been hit in anger? Have you been hit because of the sparring you do? Have you ever been hit by accident in training?
How did it affect you (especially if taken by surprise)? Thoughts?

Never been completely KO'd but I've been close a few times. Generally makes little stars creep into the edge of my vision and makes me back off or hang on (depending on the circumstances). Got hit like that at the last grading I did (a few weeks ago). Took a head kick that I barely had time to cover and even getting a bit of cover with my arms the little stars still came. Most debilitating hit I ever took was a really odd one. My current Karate instructor went for a kidney punch, I went to cover and he hit me right on the outside of the hinge of my left elbow (and he wasn't trying to control it either). One of his knuckles (he was bare knuckle) landed right between two bones and hit the nerve. It was very odd. It made me fall down for some reason, I couldn't use my left arm much (not at all below the elbow), couldn't flex my hand at all for at least 5 minutes and my arm shook uncontrollably for about 10 minutes. Just one of those lucky hits that hit a real sweet spot. The kind of hit that will probably never happen again.

I've been 'hit' plenty of times but not had many major injuries, usually just bumps and bruises and the like. I was once hit so hard by my karate instructor that he cracked a couple of my ribs. I've also been KO'd once at TKD, about 3 weeks ago.

I've only really been hit hard during gradings, the only injuries I have had were a cracked rib and the other time I got punched in the throat but neither were bad enough to stop the session.

I got punched in the nuts once.......ouch!
Had my teeth punched through my lip, ribs smashed trying to be clever with a back kick, punched in the throat so I gargled nicely etc etc
What we do for fun eh!

I've never been knocked out cold. However, I've been dropped a few times, I've had both eye's brows split numerous times and have broken my nose twice and this was all during Karate training and competeing. Working I've absorbed quite a few punches, a couple of bottles around the head and a few hefty kicks in the face but always survived to do the job lol Had to deal with the threat of knives a couple of times and a gun once... what a wonderful world eh?

My mum used to slap my legs. Does that count?

My mum used to slap my legs. Does that count? Yes it does. Anything done by a Mum counts for double. ;D (it's like D &D again! Instructor shouting is 10 points, Mum shouting at you is worth 20. An instructor hitting you is 50 points, with Mum it's 100. Double again if she uses a hit in conjunction with the Magic Words "Wait til your father hears about this" or "Go to your room")

Ah but you see I possess "The magical legs of leaping". They negate the mum's leg slap on a roll of 3+.

Many of the panic blocks in kata were devised against the leg slapping techniques of a mum
