I also make different sounds for different things. Though I'd have to run out the back and try some stuff to see what the sounds are, and I don't feel so inclined at the moment. But I think it's just sort of whatever comes out naturally at the time. Quite possibly it might vary with the technique and the target. Though I am very much not thinking "what sound should I make" as I kiai. Mick

Has anyone tried hitting objects (such as a pad with padholder) with and without kiai? Or maybe since this thread started you've played around with the sounds of kiai whilst hitting?
Are you noticing any difference?

I think my student, Shadowplay on this board should describe what happened when I hit him (lightly) using basic sound projection....

I have had some experience of feeling the effects of some strikes with different sound tones attatched to them, the strikes around the area of spleen 20 had differring effects on my body in both there penetration and there affect. Having felt a chi ball impact in that area from Martyn Harris Sensei before and thought i was fairly prepared for what i was about to experience....I was wrong!!! a lighter strike using sound succeeded in putting me out of training for several weeks and causing some serious pain but i did get a "Dillman appology" ;D while another strike using a different tone caused a sick nauseous reaction and another caused little reaction other than the usually physical impact.

This subject is amazing. It's really hard to get your head around it. So if, for instance we look at this paragraph: Sounds can be used to enhance physical skills. "Gam" (pronounced as in "come") is used to bring your Ki Power up when you pick up something heavy. The sound must be made strongly. The "g" in gam is almost a "k" sound. "Um" is used in throwing. So, these two words can be combined into "ga-um" for picking up and throwing an object. Do you need to know about the likes of Ki and channelling it etc to get benefits ? The next time you're at sofaworld and the man is trying to throw a sofa into the back of your capri, can you suggest to him "hey, say ga-um, it'll help"? Ok its a silly example but i'm being genuine about the question...

I would like to feel something like this.... . . . well without the injuries and the puking.

Are you noticing any difference? I've done that in the past. I noticed that my techniqe was better and much more powerful when I kiai'd.

Yup, this is the one. If RDKI still reads this forum, i'd be quite interested in knowing how you've got on with your experimenting with this since last writing about it?
Cheers.

POP, this is the sound of my head exploding. ;D
First lets approach this from a rational point of view. The normal human voice range is pretty narrow. Few of us can make a dog howell or shatter glass. The normal human voice power is pretty low. We do not have enough power to project enough energy to break much by force alone. Yes, it is said that a trained singer can break a glass, but that is done by resonance, not power, but remember this, it may be useful. As Angela well noted, probably the best reason is to keep you breathing. It would appear to have it best effect here, however......... As also noted different tones seem to have affects. In judo the kia is taught, not only as a technique to breath, but as a tool to put your opponent off guard. Not only by startling them, but find the tone they dislike. I was taught in judo to use different tones as I fought and find one that made the other dude stiffen. It seemed to work from time to time. In karate, there are at least two types of kia, one from the throat, and one from the belly, (tanden?). I do not know about your schools, or even if it is a shotokan thing, but at my school we are taught two breathing styles, from the lungs, and the other using the belly to breath deep. Each has a very different tone in their kia. Unless you are really loud, I do not see how you can do much damage. But the tone does seem to have an effect. I would try different sound, pitches, even words. In the high or throat, and from the belly, see what happens. As for killing things, well my wife does ask that I stop singing in the shower. The cats do seem to leave, and the dog does howell, I suspect they just do not like show tunes.

I am pretty much silent and do not kiai, when I did attempt to kiai I did not notice any differences in power, I do breath from the tandem though, my sensei still yells at me for not kiaing but noted that my demon eyes makes my training partner stiffen, lol
