Do people find that their Kata have themes running through them? Either the feel of the kata while performing them, or the bunkai applied to the kata. For example I feel that Heian Sandan is a kata that has a lot of emphasis on head locks/rips; it also feels a very deepset, hard, stompy kata. Heian Yondan, on the other hand, is a lot more sharp, striking kata.
What do you think? Can you see themes running through kata?

Yes.
It's always interesting to train in the 'other' kata if it has a pair, or if it is a member of a group. That really helps to show the 'theme' of the kata. Jion, Ji'in and Jitte are a good example of this.
Studying the name of the kata (English translation) is also good for revealing what the form is about.
Well, I think so anyway. ;D
