I might have agreed with the sentiment that kata is the heart of karate, but not that it is the soul of karate. To me it makes it sound somehow mystical, that learning kata will teach you something where I don't believe kata by itself teaches anything. Mick

Philosophical introspection and "losing one's self" in an activity is difficult to do with a partner, though, isn't it?
Kata might not teach anything on it's own, but it holds a lot of information if you've got a key to all the doors it shows you.

Mick I actually debated whether to put heart or soul within the question. Then I had to go out so I plumped for soul. Heart/soul/centre/core...

I totally agree. Without kata it's not karate IMO. You may as well do kickboxing et al.

I think it depends on how you look at what you do, is it a sport, a hobby or a way of life?. Are you a martial artist or a fighter? I use kata as a teaching tool, I can't feel spiritual about them I'm afraid though I do enjoy doing them. Muay Thai has patterns/forms/kata as does judo.
