Applications I would say are not only important but absolutely vital. Without them you would just be doing a dance. What would be the point of doing kata with no applications?

I agree that application is SO important,
the primary method of this is taken from kata bunkai pratise, leading to an understanding of principles. once thats in place let the technique flow.......its not fixed anymore.

Maybe it could be considered not important if a person only trains for competition.
Personally, I think that bunkai is essential when training in kata, or its not really kata.
