Considering people's responses to the Ki thread I was wondering if anybody has ever looked at alternate therapies, such as Reiki, Acupuncture, Reflexology etc? Is anybody a practitioner in this?
I was thinking of looking into Acupuncture at some point, as we do a bit of PP work and I thought it may be beneficial to do something on the healing side rather than the destructive side.
I'm also very interested in Reiki, the theory behind it and what sort of effects it can have. At one point I may consider training in it, does anyone know what this involves, and what sort of outlay (money and time) it will involve?

Hi Angela I am currently Reiki Level II & can definately recommend it. Before you get attuned I would suggest you go for a few sessions first to see how you get on. Then the process is generally you go for your Level I attunment this can last either one/two days & you will cover the background how you actually give a treatment & usually some sort of mediation & then you get done so to speak . You then have a twenty one day 'clearing period' where your body gets adjusted to the changes & then off you go. Level I is really about getting used to being able to channel the energy & you will be doing it on yourself which is always a bonus after you have been training + its very good for hangovers. ;D They normally say you have around a six month period til your Level II BUT again you will start knowing if you are ready and more importantly if you want to continue. For Level II you go through the same sort of thing & you are basically able to increase the amount of energy that you can channel + couple of other things. At this stage you are then free to be let lose on the world. As for the cost it does vary greatly for each level depending on who you see but trust in the force & you will know who is the right person to be attuned by There are also some 'drawbacks' depending on your point of view that can be experienced the more you get into it but again each person is different so the degree to which you experince them varies. Personally I think its one of the best things I have ever done but like everything its whatever flicks you switch

Can you elaborate on the drawbacks?

drawbacks may not have been the best way to put it Again this is from personal experience & from talking to a lot of other people who have been attuned. You may find that as time goes on your perception on life may change, this equally applies to people. For example I have found that places I used to go to quite happily I now feel very uncomfortable in & also people I used to be friends with I no longer am happy in their company. As I said before each persons experience with this can occur on a very large scale or just can just happily sail through not noticing the difference. On the plus side though I have also found that with some people the friendship has been increased dramatically & a lot of people have also found that you tend to experience the situation of being in the right place at the right time a lot more which can be really freaky at times ;D I firmly believe that everything you do go through does actually greatfully improve your life not to mention your personal growth even though it can be quite painfull at the time. oh yeah the 21 day clearing period can be a bitch as well lol ;D These are all things that you need to consider because once your are attuned it cant be undone & for some reason they dont tend to mention this on the adverts.. hmm wonder why lol

What sort of stuff happens in the 21 day cleansing period?

During the cleansing period you are basically recieving a full detox so to speak. Your body starts to operate at a higher vibration or frequency than it did previously due to the Reiki energy you are recieving and channeling & this increases as you go through the levels. It takes around three days for the energy to clear each Chakra point so hense the twenty one days & in doing so any blockages you have either emotionally or physically begin to clear. This in turn allows you to channel the energy at a greater level. Now when you go through this, there are a wide variety of things you can experience from increased emotional activity, increased awareness of everything around you, dietary and alcohol tolerance, aches and pains. As I said previously the effect you experience varies greatly depending on the person and what you come into it with either emotionally or physically. During my Level I - I had a nightmare & I was quite ill & experienced big swings on the emotion side so I went out to celebrate the end of it only to find I wasnt very compatible with alcohol anymore which I was even more gutted about During Level II - I sailed through it but then again had a big opening on the awareness & self growth side which was quite unerving at times. I am getting my Level III around May so cant wait for that lol

I've also been playing around with the idea of alternate therapys for a little while.
A degree course at acupuncture at the Bristol college (south west college of chinese medicine - or something like that) will take you 3 years. You can mainly do the course over weekends, it works out I think at 1 weekend a month. Though I get the feeling you'll have to go up there some week days.
That'll set you back £15,000 +. Think its just over £5000 per year and then you have to buy other stuff on the course, but then at the end you'd be qualified enough to start up your own practice, earn yourself £5,000 per year and then the course will have paid for itself in three years.
Shiatsu massage seems to be pretty closely related to Acupuncture, it contains the same principles of PPs, chankras and all that stuff. In fact, the above acupuncture course, it seems that in the first year you study Tai Chi and related things to get you accustomed to using your Ki, and you learn some Shiatsu.
Looks like there's a school down your way Angela, where you can learn Shiatsu and thats cheaper to learn, more in the £1,500 per year range.

I'm interested in "Alternative" therapies and I'm due to start having a course of acupuncture on a knackered knee soon. That's actually being paid for by my local NHS primary care trust - shock horror! A Western Medicine organisation actually working with alternative therapys! ;D Anyhoo, I've never had acupuncture before, but I'll let you know how goes it after my first session. The hospital is organising it for me, so it'll probably be sometime in March... that's March 2010 according to the usual speed at which Rotherham Hospital NHS Trust moves at...
