Hi all A bit about me: People often call me Mick, because that's my name and I answer more readily to it. ;D I'm from Perth, Australia. I started training in karate in 1997 with a shotokan-based club although they had a somewhat eclectic kata progression which alternated between goju and shotokan kata though without any of the foundation kata of either system. Still, I stayed with them until Shodan. Since then I have trained with a ShitoRyu club until I found my current teacher and mentor, under whom I regraded to Shodan in December 2004. I have also done some training in jujutsu, reaching 6th kyu, and train in the kobudo class at the jj club and currently hold 6th kyu in that as well. Other interests include playing guitar, and strangely the family seems to leave me alone when I do , reading and (obviously) browsing the internet. My nickname 'Sionnagh' is one I have used for over a decade, since BBS's were the big thing (if you don't know what a BBS is you're probably too young) and 2400 baud modem was considered pretty ok (9600 were around but expensive). I lurk around a number of boards and even post sometimes. Or often, depending on the board. Having said all that, you only really need to read the first two sentences. Mick

Hi Mick Welcome to KR. Enjoy your stay! Just a quick question. The first style you were with weren't GKR were they? I ask because I know they are big in Australia and they do a Shotokan/Goju mix. Happy new year! Angela

It was the GKR, but it sounds better to say it the other way. I have no wish to sound like it's bashing but I do not blame others for the low regard in which the GKR is held, I know full well the limitations of the system and the syllabus. Mick

I've read some, shall I say... interesting, things about GKR. But never having trained with them I couldn't comment.
I guess because they are so huge that they will have some good dojo and some bad dojo. As for the overall style.. like I said I have no idea other than what other people have said.
