I see this is the proper place for me!
Well, my name is obviously Colleen, I am a Univeristy student at McGill University in Montreal. I am taking Psychology (hopefully sports psychology!)
I had started Tae Kwon do with my EX- boyfriiend (idiot), but stopped it as he is still there. I had taken a wen-do womens self defence course recently and the lady teaching it told me that Karate might be a better choice for defending myself. I hate to say Im little at 5'4 and 115 lbs...ggrrrr but Im lifting weights so watch out!
There is Gojo ry? and Shotokon? near the campus, but I would appreciate any help to choose something good for someone like me (in the phone book there's like 50 places!)
Anyways Im happy to be here ...and I love tigers!

Hi Colleen, welcome to the KR forums.
With regards to starting a new martial art it's the same in anything in life, it depends on who you choose. The best thing is to go along to a couple of sessions near you and see if they offer what you require. Do a bit of a search on the Internet and see if you can find any information about the groups. See if the times and days fit in with what you can do. See if the price is something you'd be prepared to pay for what they offer.
A lot of people will make decisions based on a style name but the truth is it will vary from place to place, and depending on who teaches you.

Hi Colleen, welcome to Karate Resource! I'd suggest for you to get a list of questions ogether in your head or on paper and take yourself and your questions to the dojo's near where you live. I'm sure that as you live in Montreal that you'll not be spoiled for choice! Your questions could include things such as: price, how often training times are, how often beginners can train, whether they mix adults and kids classes, whether you have yo buy special uniform from them, how often gradings are held, whether or not you have to grade/test, what the pass/fail rate is, how long it takes to get to blackbelt, what the focus of the school is (sport? Self defence?), how long the instructor(s) have been training, if they have ever entered/won any competitions (if the school encourages competition entry), are they registered/affiliated with any organisations (no necessarily a bad thing if they're not, some instructors just prefer to go it alone). If the instructors seem reluctant or unwilling to answer any questions or seem to have something to hide then it's probably not a good place to train. Ditto for it they seem keen to press you into signing a contract. I'd suggest that you go and watch or try out at leat 2 lessons at each place. If you just see one then you can almost certainly guarantee that you'll be watching on the one evening that they decide to do something different or just work on one technique all night (which can be a good thing, but doesn't give you a true representation of a place). Good luck with finding a dojo!

Voyeurism is the easy explanation. Can I suggest getting out of cyberspace and out into the real world, take it steady though 10 min at first and build up until you can maybe get on a bus, go into a pub.

Can I warn about anyone posting their pics on here. There are one or two prats out there, and I know who they are, that seem to take an extreme delight in taking your picture and then posting it over the Internet. In fact that was one of the main reasons "boris" was banned, because he kept sticking up a picture of some female - and if I suspect that you are posting pictures that are not you then I will not hesitate to delete them, followed by deleting your account. Now as I am sure that a few people on here are friends of "boris" (easy way to spot them - look for the ones that spout moronic drivel), and I suspect he's back under a different name, I would recommend caution before giving too many personal details and photos out. It seems the a-holes aren't JUST out on the streets waiting to attack us

Opps. EDIT. Are we allowed to post links to pictures of famous people such as karatekid? I thought it was funny and I'm sure that karatekid doesn't mind.

I don't like the idea of bandwidth leeching. If you want to show pictures displayed on another site I prefer for a hyperlink direct to the site, rather than showing the image here. Apart from that there are copyright issues - if you take a picture from another site and host it yourself you could be stealing something which someone owns the copyright for.
If the picture belongs to you or you have received permission to display it that is another matter. However I personally prefer to take the "better safe than sorry" route and if I feel there are laws being contravened I will delete pictures.

Hey Coleen looks like you are in a similar situation to me shame i didnt get such a warm welcome on the other site though instead i was met with suspicion Ok. So you feel I have treated you unfairly. You are unhappy with the fact that based on your posts on the other forum I viewed you with suspicion, after which I wrote a long post explaining why. And yet, here you are. So you are unhappy with me and my decisions and yet you still come over to my forum? Interesting. Feel free to hang around and read the forum, but at this current time I am dealing with a bunch of losers that have nothing better to do than hang around MA forums and annoy people. So I am logging IP addresses, I am keeping tabs, and any trollish behaviour will be dealt with.
