i'm not really sure this is a drill and i am sure that i'm not an instructor but i thought i would post it anyway, every couple weeks or so we'll take class outside and find a nice grassy hill to workout on, we'll go through basics, some kata and even a little light sparring, if you haven't done it before i think your students will be amazed at how much things change when you're not on a nice smooth wooden floor.

I went on one of Iain Abernethy's seminars and he got us to perform one of his 'Will Drills'
Quote from his website about performing this drill:
I found this a very err intesting drill!
Is this the sort of thing you were after?

One training drill we do is this. We all stand around in the training hall and the instructor shouts someones name. That person is then IT. Everyone must then turn upon and grab whoever is IT, pin them down and all pile on top of him. The instructor keeps shouting different names at regular intervals so that everyone has a turn of being IT. Whoever is IT is allowed to fight off everyone any way he likes to avoid getting piled upon. Obviously this is rarely successfull because IT is hopelessly outnumbered. Try this with about twenty students and its great fun.

To be honest, although I had a joke, it sounds fun. Seems like a great way to test fighting spirit. With no real way of winning the point is still not to give up. Would have thought there was quite a large potential for injury in the resulting melee though?

We actually used to do a smiliar drill like that in Aikido. There would be one person defendng and a minimum of 5 people (it was usually 8 or more depending on who was at class) attacking.
Attackers would have to attack using control and ditto for the defender. The attackers always 'won' but it was interesting to be in that situation and to see how long people could keep going for.
It was one of the first drills I ever did at Aikido - in my first ever lesson there. I only knew 2 Aiki techniques (both of them very badly!) but I enjoyed it immensely.
I managed to go home that night with a split lip and a twisted wrist, though. Still went back for more the following week - must be mental! lol
