I believe I now have 5 heavyweights, and 3 mediumweights, which I no longer wear.

Erm, I'm not actually sure, as I have a few that I wear regularly, a couple of judo gi that I don't wear these days (since I had to stop Aikido) and at least two other gi that live in the bottom of my wardrobe and don't come out very often, as they're either very poor quality or too short in the 'skirt' for my liking. I also have a couple of really old spares that live at the club in case any newbies need to borrow them. I took 2 gi down to the local charity shop a few months back too. I'm sure they were bemused to recieve 2 pairs of 'funny pyjamas'.

I might be wrong on this but I reckon it's down to the cold weather adapted body shape. Shorter limbs and longer body reduces your surface area and helps retain heat in northern climes. Peoples who originate from hot countries have shorter bodies and longer limbs.

That's a very interesting theory!
Anyway, that's a list of gi that I have. The list of gi that I iron is considerably shorter. ;D I don't iron if I can help it.

Who irons a gi?
A lecturer of mine used to say ‘if you look good you might be, if you look crap you are!
But ironing a gi…get a life…washing one is ok (now and again), otherwise no one will want to train with you, but a few creases in ones gi hardly effects ones ability to train. Perhaps ones time might be better spent actually learning a ma rather than looking neat and tidy while attempting to learn.

Me! A lecturer of mine used to say ‘if you look good you might be, if you look crap you are! But ironing a gi…get a life…washing one is ok (now and again), Ewwww! Or washing it after every training session. Sweat consists of the same make up as urine - you wouldn't pee on a gi and then wear it would you? Would you?? otherwise no one will want to train with you, but a few creases in ones gi hardly effects ones ability to train. Perhaps ones time might be better spent actually learning a ma rather than looking neat and tidy while attempting to learn. Sheesh! Are you telling me that spending a little bit of time running an iron over my gi before going to the dojo has seriously affected my training? I think that as karate is about respect and discipline actually taking the time to wash and iron a gi, so that you don't look like you have tumbled from your bed into the dojo, is fairly important. It's a bit like saying that armed forces would win more wars if the officers weren't so obsessed with the soldiers having nice, clean and extremely ironed uniforms.

I iron and wash my Gi after every session.
Personal pride...I'd never turn up to class with a Gi that looked like a crisp packet.

(Note to self remember to put smiley faces on post) Years ago I left a gi in a bag, two days later set off to train, got there opened the bag , throw the gi away went home, threw the bag away. Since then I always was a gi after I have trained. Although you can soon tell those who don’t. Does anybody take in ironing? Not just gi’s shirts etc.? I also suggested to my wife that she might iron it, she suggested somewhere I might like to keep it.

Oh, washing gi after training is a must! Ironing... that's something I'm not so keen on. However living in a land of near-perfect weather I can usually hang them outside to dry. Outdoor clothesline... marvellous invention! (Our version of an airing cupboard) Mick
