I'm looking to replace one of my old-faithful Blitz Silver Tournament gi's (its the type with the red label), as it has certainly seen better day's and needs to retire to the big dojo in the sky... I really like that brand of gi, but I'm open to any suggestions as to another sort to get. I have quite a few gi's that I own; most of which are medium or heavy weight ones, as I prefer them to the light weight sort. I train very regularly at the dojo, so it needs to be something robust which can stand up to being battered around the dojo and used for a bit of grappling and ground work. Ideally, I'd prefer another 14 or 16oz gi, with the trousers/pants having elastcated as well as tied waist. I've heard that Kwon make an elasticated waist heavy weight gi - is this correct? What brand of gi do you all wear, and would you recommend it? Ta!

I currently wear Blitz too but no longer wear a white gi (must get one to show off my new cub badges - which are stunning I might add ;D) I recently gave away my top of the range kamikaze gi to one of my students as it was just too light for my taste. My favourite gi of all time is probably the Kamae Premier. Japanese cut, relatively light but VERY "snappy". Extremely comfortable and hard wearing too but, alas, no elasticated waist. A lovely gi though. My next purchase will probably be a top of the range adidas as that looks stunning too. Just hope they make them big enough! Martyn

I highly recommend the Giko 14oz Silver Tournament gi. It comes in brushed cotton, it has elasticated waist and ties (a rarity in heavyweight gis). It has been pre-shrunk as well, which is always good. It seems to have a more fitted waist, which is very nice for the female figure and has a long cut top, which I love. (I can't stand short tops which ride up over your belt)
Shameless plug alert - If you shop at Paragon Martial Arts click on one of the links from the Karate Resource site, this way I get a percentage of the sales which will help fund the site! ;D It is a shop that I have used on many occasions, it doesn't charge over the odds and delivery is always swift... I wouldn't have recommended it unless I had tried it, tested it and liked what I got! - End Shameless Plug

Angela I can back up Angela's "Shameless Plug", as Paragon MA are a top-quality company who provide great service. The next time I get summat from them I'll definately use the KR link! ;D Looks like I'll be buying the Kamikaze gi, seen as it makes your punches more powerful...

My favourite ever gi was the Kamikaze Europa, which is a nice middleweight one. My second favourite is the Kamikaze America, which is it's heavier brother. They are far and away the most comfortable, hard wearing and best fitting suits I've ever had.

KWON kata heavyweight gi is very good, I own 2. I've had them for about 10 years now, they wore out after about 8 years, but I'm very attached to them !!. By worn out I mean that there is some wear around the collor. Shurendo tournement is very good too - although a bit pricey, still christmas is coming up.
happy hunting

Can anyone recommend a good quality make of gi that are a lot longer in the top length, without being ridiculously long in the arms and legs? (If you've ever seen me sew a badge on you'd understand) Price is an issue as well. As cheap as possible without comprimising quality please.

The karate-kid.co.uk Kata Master gi. It's being discontinued, so it's cheaper than normal. "Santa" has bought me one for Christmas. ;D

Ignoring the awful version of Shikodachi in the pose the Accent gi looks quite good. That top looks very long and you can get your name embroidered on it... just like the old school days. Not a bad price either... has anyone else worn one of these? Scrolling down, I am currently coveting the Shureido. Angela

Well, the Accent is similar to the Kata Master gi that I have (I think it's the replacement for it actually). I've only worn my new gi once to try it on, but it seems to be very comfortable and durable. It's also the first gi that I've bought where I haven't had to have the trouser legs taken up!!
I'm coveting the Shureido too.... but there's no chance of me being able to spend £100 on a gi any time soon...

I know you might say to ask my sensei, and i will, but i wanted to come on and get involved. Cheers Hiya If you are really new to karate I would suggest something in the middleweight range. You don't want to fork out too much until you are 100% sure you will be there forever, and anything too lightweight may tear under the wear and tear of a normal karate lesson. Click onto one of the Paragon Martial Arts links on the main Karate Resource site and have a look through there - I'd personally go for the 10oz weight suits to start, but you may prefer something a bit lighter in the 8oz range. Hope this helps Angela
