i don't know this jones character, but i'll wager hes been hit before, and you will get hit in a fight no matter what you do. The best you can do is minimalise the damage, try and take the hits on the arms as oposed to the face and jaw.

Ok too subtle. Sparing semi or full, while building up certain resistances cannot really prepare one for the mindless assault Jones likes to go on about.
I enjoy sparing, but it happens within a safe controlled environment, therefore all it can really, on an empirical level, is prepare one for that kind of sparing.

Yes, yes I agree with that mate. No matter what art you do it's completely different than street fighting. In street fighting you are constantly attacking and moving forward. I have been hit before plenty of times.

We are always taught to hit the attacker first before they attack. As long as you are convinced that they are about to attack you then you are ok in the eyes of the law, it is self defense.

That's untrue.
I was attacked about a year ago by 4 blokes in a pizza shop. One of them started pushing me about, me being pissed and the fact it was my birthday and had, at the time, a pregnant girlfriend waiting for me outside, could not be bothered in the slightest. Yet he persisted with the pushing, then he hit me across the bridge of my nose and broke it......at this point I headbutted him square in the face and knocked him clean out...that's when his mates joined in and dragged me outside and promptly pushed me to the floor and started kicking me about my person. I lay on the floor and dished out kicks but was rapidly overcome by them, so I curled up into a ball and waited for them to get fed up. In the meantime the ex had called the police who turned up just as they were getting bored the police promptly stood me up and gathered statements..........and informed me that if I wanted to press charges I would be liable myself because I had retaliated with a headbutt, basically I was wide open to an assault change myself, even though it was SELF DEFENSE!

I moved this thread seeing as it really has nothing to do with Kata and Bunkai chat.

lol, Andym, the police were basically saying "don't try and press charges because it will cause us a load of paper work and hassle". Unfortunately the police saw all of you as a bunch of drunken heathens out on the ale. They are not there to pass judgement as to who was in the right and who was in the wrong. Therefore this backs up my point about the police not caring if you beat the sh*t out of someone.
Attack first and end the fight quickly and brutally. The police couldn't care less.

Sorry guys if you feel I'm butting here but having read this thread I felt I had to add my little bit!
Sparring is good because it develops the reactions and allows you to test yourself within a 'safe' environment. However if you wish to develop yourself and indeed prepare yourself further then you up the intensity of your training and sparring. In kyokushinkai we compete fairly 'robustly' and train quite hard as well so we feel we are well prepared for these eventualities.
As for the pizza shop incident with a pregnant girlfriend outside why did you feel the need to attack 4 guys? you should have hightailed it out of there friend and got safely back in the car or brought these punks into a wider environment where you stood a better chance.

Like I said, I didn't confront them....all I wanted was my 'American Hot' pizza. I only retaliated after he had broken my nose!
