This could come across badly…but how far do we go in ‘encouraging’ students to get padded up and have a go. I've just read Ian Abernethy's grappling techniques (Excellent, get it) and Geoff Thompson's 3 second fighter, also excellent though it's short so you should be able to read in the book shop/library.
Both are very enlightening books and both are written by Nth dan black belts who've spent large amounts of time working as bouncers and the like.
Both recommend several different types of sparring from touch to hard contact once properly armoured. However both suggest limiting the type of sparring e.g. grappling vs grappling, punch/kick vs punch/kick, punch/kick vs grappling etc. with well defined end criteria.
One of the points Geoff Thompson makes is that even with all the training, none of what we do at the moment prepare emotionally for the moment when someone walks up and says "What the f**k are you looking at?" or asks "Got the time mate?" and then produces a knife demanding your wallet/purse. What strategies to use once it's happened. How to recognise when they really mean to attack. That kind of thing.
BTW, the police will charge everyone involved in a fight with assault and then leave it up to the lawyers and the court to decide what really happened. So if you get in a fight, you're going need a lawyer cos you're going to court, that simple. They do the same WRT traffic accidents if there's a shadow of a doubt about what happened.
