Do you think martial arts is totally misrepresented by the media?
The front page of our local paper today has a headline: Karate expert robbed and left in street
I read the story with some interest to find that this "expert" is in fact a purple belt. Hardly an expert, in my opinion.
A comment by her in the paper states, "Whoever did this was taking a risk because I'm a purple belt in karate, so I can look after myself." Over-confidence? Perhaps backed up by the fact she was out walking by herself at 2am...
Anyway, it just goes to show that the media pretty much takes any belt in karate to be an expert. I wonder how that would be portatrayed if the attacker was the "expert" in karate...

P.s. The online version doesn't go into so much detail, and doesn't have the quote from her... but to me the story sounds well suspicious. StoryInsurance job?

Karate expert and female bouncer!
Insurance job? Possibly....she had expensive jewellery and a lot of cash on her.
Expert? Definately not! I don't even class myself as an 'expert' even at Shodan.

With her £1000+ platinum ring and she just *happened* to go to the cash machine first. Oh and she's not sure if she did get attacked, or maybe just fell over and then got robbed after. (more balance training needed in those karate classes, lol)
It might be the country air but I smell bullshit.

i mean surely in all that time spent at the emergency room she would have wanted to look at her two watches to see how long she had been waiting...not only in the UK but also in the US...and realise she had been robbed before she got pissed off because she waited so long, jumped in a cab and couldn't pay for it.

That's very true! Especially as I know for a fact that Torbay A&E does not have clocks plastered around.

but anyway, i would definately say that martial arts are misrepresented in media...i mean look at movies for example, and some of the advertisements i see nowadays ("after a short time your small children will be able to stop any attacker...blah blah blah").

In most cases where the word expert is used I usually take it with a pinch of sault especially where MA are involved.
Expert (exspert is made up of ex something in the past, spert a drip under pressure)
I guess the general rule of thumb is that if it isn’t fully understood by the author of a piece then it isn’t going to be favourable, this doesn’t only apply to MA. The common denominator is the McDojo mentality that has already been described filling peoples heads with nonsense, it is no good them saying they were taking a risk, if, and in this case it is a big if, you have just had your arse kicked.

It doesn't sound altogether implausible (concussions can really mess with your sense of what/where/how/who), but it sounds like she may have 'embellished' on what she lost, probably for insurance purposes.
In any event, had she been struck from behind... it gives light to her not developing her 'soft skills' (hehe, bleeding topics).
