Sorry...but Itrain to be lethal....I train for the aspects that will see me standing and my enemy laying at my feet.....like you said people train for d\ifferent reasons...but those that only deal with the way...or only with the lethal side...are unbalanced.....SD is not a plus...it is the whole reason of MA...it is the reason it was created all of that fitness stuff....go to tae bo...enlighten ment...go find a Guru...Lethality is what it is about...violence and how to control it....and how not to lose control....knowing how not to hit...good...but does your opponent know this! *bows respectfully* If you want to fight, then go and fight. Not sport, not tournaments. Go into the roughest bar you can think of and pick a fight with the roughest looking bunch of guys in there. Anything else, is pure conjecture. Still being belligerent.....is that supposed to humble me...I had a job and that is what I did I got into fights on a regular basis....for four years I fought battles not even one on one fights almost every week....and I am sorry to say that SD is about lethality enabling yourself to escalate until the threat is over.....if that means dealing out death than so be it...THAT IS NOT HOW I HANDLE THINGS...OR NOT ANYTHING THAT I APPROVE OF....but it is a fact...martial arts was created to help you learn the skills to hurt maim and kill....to test it you need to test it at its most basic level and that is it!

Funakoshi's "My Way of Life" pushed karate more as a mind and spirit exercise.

Funakoshi's "My Way of Life" pushed karate more as a mind and spirit exercise. Surely not. We're all supposed to be disembowelling each other, and ripping the still-beating hearts from our enemies.

But it's the weekend, even psychos are entitled to a break. LOL. I think it's pretty daft arguing what MA are and are not, as that's going to depend on everyone individually. If someone wishes to believe they turn them into some kind of superhero killing machine, that's fine, just as long as they're not telling me what I have to believe. I remember many years ago I ran a questionnaire in one of my clubs, asking people why they were practicing MA, and Self Defence was given as a primary reason by something like 10%. That figure will tend to vary depending on the type of club or gym, as these will attract different people with different motivation. You're reasons will also change through life, and anyone who's truly been involved in MA for any great length of time will tell you this.
